HSU YUNGHSU - "Il dubbio di Sisifo"

From 4 June to 30 July 2026, the Fondazione Arkad in Seravezza (Lucca) will present “The Doubt of Sisyphus – Fluid Forms of Ceramics”, the only Italian stop of an exhibition by Taiwanese artist Hsu Yunghsu, one of the leading figures in contemporary international ceramic sculpture.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 4 June at 6 pm, with the artist in attendance.

Born in Kaohsiung in 1955, Hsu developed an original artistic path, turning to art after experiences as a teacher and musician. His monumental works, created entirely by hand from porcelain and stoneware, transform ceramics into organic, dynamic forms that interact with light and space.

The surfaces bear traces of the artist's gestures and physical labour, revealing the creative process through marks, tensions, and irregularities. This intense and repetitive work evokes the myth of Sisyphus, reflecting on the relationship between humanity, matter, and creation.

The result is a series of immersive installations that transform the perception of the exhibition spaces and engage the public in a visual and physical experience.

The exhibition also represents an important moment of dialogue between international artistic research and the Versilia area, which has a long-standing link to marble and bronze, opening up new perspectives on contemporary ceramic art. During the exhibition, the Fondazione Arkad will organise workshops, talks and activities for artists, students and enthusiasts.

'The Doubt of Sisyphus' is part of a travelling project that was presented in Seoul (Korea) and Van (Turkey) after Taiwan, before arriving in Seravezza.

The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00.

On Sunday 7 July at 6 pm, there will also be a guided tour of the exhibition: Master Hsu will present his works and explain his working method.
